History: Withers safes are closely tied to the history of the Withers family, who became renowned safe manufacturers in West Bromwich, England, during the 19th century. The family business originated with George Withers, an iron turner, who had nine children—several of whom went on to establish their own safe-making firms.
Initially, the family was involved in making metal bedsteads from 1843, but this business struggled, prompting a shift to iron safes by 1855. George Withers himself was first listed as an iron safe manufacturer in West Bromwich trade directories by 1861. Among his children, Samuel, Thomas, and Jesse Withers were notable for establishing competing safe businesses in the late 19th century.
Samuel Withers & Co. became particularly prominent, exhibiting innovative safes at the London Exhibition in 1862 and later incorporating as a limited company in 1909. Thomas Withers & Sons Ltd also thrived, exporting safes internationally, with the business remaining family-run until the mid-20th century. The Withers name became synonymous with quality and innovation in safe manufacturing, with various branches of the family producing a wide range of safes and security products for over a century,
