S.Griffiths & Son safes are few and far between, not many come up. This one has been painted in its past life so usually make the safe in good condition. It was originally blue so we've made a visual based on a blue theme. It also has a nice solid brass plaque.
We have added a design to give you an idea of what this safe could look like after a restoration.
History:
S. Griffiths & Son was a safe manufacturer based in Heath Town, Wolverhampton, active during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The company operated at the lower end of the market, producing affordable safes, sometimes even using cast iron for their safe plates instead of the more typical cast brass. Their safes were marketed as “fire-resisting safe engineers,” and examples of their work, such as cast brass or iron safeplates and improved bent steel safes, survive today.
Griffiths was among many smaller safe makers that struggled to compete as the industry shifted toward more advanced bent body safes around the turn of the 20th century. Many of these smaller firms were eventually pushed out as larger companies and new manufacturing techniques dominated the market. In the early 1940s, the Griffiths Safe Company was combined with Chubb, primarily as an outlet for second-hand safes taken in part-exchange. The business faced financial difficulties and was later sold to Tann International in 1970.
