Chubb safes are very well built. They are heavy for their size and the build quality is superior. This one has a nice door frame and detailed brass handle.

We have added a design to give you an idea of what this little gem could look like after a restoration.

History: Chubb of St Paul safes refer to high-security safes bearing the Chubb name and manufactured or branded with reference to St Paul’s Churchyard, London, where Chubb once had offices and a notable presence in the safe-making industry. The brand is renowned for its robust construction, with a history dating back to the early 19th century and a reputation for developing some of the first burglar-resistant safes.
A specific example, such as the “Chubb’s St Pauls, London 024” safe, showcases a heavy, strong build with a complex locking mechanism
Origins and Expansion: Chubb was founded by brothers Charles and Jeremiah Chubb in 1818 as a locksmith company in Wolverhampton. By 1827, they had opened their first London premises at 57 St Paul’s Churchyard, cementing their reputation as a leading security provider in the capital.
Safe Manufacturing: In 1835, Chubb patented its first burglar-resistant safe. While initially known for locks, the company soon became equally renowned for safes. In 1837, Chubb opened its first safe manufacturing works in London, marking the start of large-scale safe production.
Royal and Institutional Clients: Chubb safes were highly regarded, serving prestigious clients such as the Bank of England, the Duke of Wellington, and the royal household. The company was awarded special licenses by King George IV and later became the sole supplier of locks to the Post Office and HM Prison Service.
Innovation: Chubb continued to innovate, developing both fire-resistant and burglar-resistant safes. The company’s reputation for quality and security was bolstered by public demonstrations and royal patronage.
Legacy: The St Paul’s Churchyard location was central to Chubb’s London operations for decades. Chubb safes from this era are recognised for their craftsmanship and remain collectible today.
