This is a lovely small Ratner safe. Only 460mm high, Unusual For a small safe to have a drawer inside. This was covered in emulsion paint when we got it, so the brass was in good condition. Each year we restore a safe and gift it to a charity Auction. This one is ready and in store for a charity auction later in the year. We created a classic design which is metallic green panels on our vintage black. The panels have a vine pattern in dark green and then the edges are feathered dark to give each panel a vintage look. Inside we've added a mustard suede fabric for a touch of luxury.
Inside the door we have added the quote :-
Be kind. Forgive easily. Speak well of others. Don't judge too quickly. Think positively. Exercise self discipline. Don’t make excuses. Dream big. Be patient. Smile often. Practice gratitude. See failure as an opportunity. Keep an open mind. Love yourself. Make the most of now. Don’t take opinions to heart. Listen to understand. Believe in yourself
History: Ratner Safe Co. was established in 1889 in London by Daniel Rowlinson Ratcliff, who had previously been a partner at Thomas Milner & Son, another major safe maker. Ratcliff was joined by his son William Milner Ratcliff and John M. Horner. The company was originally called Ratcliff & Horner until 1896, when it became the Ratner Safe Company Ltd. Ratner specialised in manufacturing safes, strong rooms, and strong room doors, with innovations such as safes bent at all twelve corners out of solid plate, a construction principle perfected in 1900. They also patented safe doors and rooms resistant to oxy-acetylene blowpipe attacks in 1909 and developed a unique interchangeable key lock in 1901. By 1914, Ratner employed around 200 people and was known for its drill-proof doors and advanced locking systems. In the early 1940s, Ratner merged with the Griffiths Safe Company, which handled second-hand safes. After financial difficulties, Ratner was sold to Tann International in 1970.

Please note: Safes of this age, approximately 100years old will show signs of their age and build, even after our restoration. We believe each safe has its own character, and thats what makes them special. If you purchase one of our safes, its not a NEW safe, they were built without modern tools, you will see imperfections, ie. the hinges are metal on metal (no bearings) so they may squeak and some may scratch some paintwork at the bottom hinge.
